March 28, 2008, Convention Caucus Meeting

 

Open Meeting

 

Welcome by Steve Ybarra, former Chair of the Chicano Latino Caucus.
Steve introduced new CLC Chair, Mickie Solorio Luna


All former CLC chairs were invited to the front to be seated with the CLC board, present were two former Chairs, Placido Salazar and Steve Ybarra.

 

Chair Mickie Luna introduced the Honorable Joe Coto, Assemblyman for the 23rd District and the current Chair of the CA Latino Legislative Caucus.  Assemblyman Coto’s district includes the San Jose area.

 

A Moment of Silence was held in memory of Maria Martinez.

 

Chair Mickie Luna called for a welcome of all in attendance and allowed 5 minutes  for everyone to greet their neighbors and welcome them to the Chicano Latino Caucus meeting. The greeting was well received and took another 5 minutes to settle the audience down, a recommendation was made that this greeting take place at every CLC meeting.

 

Roll Call of Officers was taken by Leticia Munguia, Vice Chair for Region 5, San Diego in the absence of the Secretary.

Business Meeting

 

Minutes of the November 17th, 2007 Meeting in Anaheim CA approved on a motion by Tony Perez, second Steve Ybarra- unanimous vote to approve Minutes were distributed to audience by young adults

 

Treasurer’s Report –Tony Perez, Treasurer reported CLC beginning account balance of $3834.00 , expenditures of $1248.00 with current operating balance of $2586.00.   Motion by Rafael Nadal, second by Placido Salazar, unanimous vote to approve.  
Treasurer’s report was distributed to audience by young adults.

 

Report on La Voz News Alert- well received by all in attendance, many compliments on the work of the caucus.

Reports of Committee Chairs

 

Vote by Mail Committee:  Steve Ybarra presented a report of his work with the legislature on the title change from Absentee Ballots to Vote by Mail.  He thanked many legislators and CLC members who assisted in making this change.  He encouraged all candidates in attendance to use this means of voting which showed a statewide increase in voting.

Young Adult Chicano Latino Division:  Frankie Frutos and Yecenia Alfaro received an astounding applause for the creation of the new young adult division.  They both presented their desire to learn more about the political latino agenda by requesting support for the Young Adult Political Empowerment Academy to be held sometime this year in Sacramento.  They would like to see a CLC Shadow your Legislator program be held so they will be better informed on what their legislators do in Sacramento.

Chair Mickie Luna encouraged legislators in the audience to assist in formulating a plan on how our caucus can present the first and initial Latino student political empowerment academy. 

 

Caucus Latino Legislature Recognitions and Introductions

 

Chair Mickie Luna introduced the first speaker- Luis Valdez, Artistic Director of El Teatro Campesino who gave an astounding message of encouragement to Latinos to get involved in the upcoming elections.

 

Ray Gonzalez, Chief of Staff introduced 27 legislators and candidates for local offices.  As many as 44 speakers had signed up to speak and due to the lack of time, many were not able to speak.  Among the speakers were:

 

Congressman Joe Baca; Senator Dean Florez, John Chang, St Controller, Judy Chu, Vice Chair, Ca St Board of Equalization, Senator Carole Migden, Karen Bass, Speaker, State Assembly, Assemblyman Kevin de Leon, Assemblyman Mark Leno, Assemblyman Dave Jones,  Assemblyman Pedro Nava,  Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Assembly Candidates Bill Monning,  Tonia Uranga, Congressional candidate Dr. Rita Ramirez Dean and many other candidates running for local offices.

 

Caucus meeting went beyond our scheduled time to 6pm.

Meeting closed at 6:05pm
